Background
Since the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared its seventeenth Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026, the Bundibugyo epidemic has grown from eight confirmed cases to more than 6,600, with over 3,200 deaths. Ituri province carries most of the burden, across most of its health zones. Unlike the Zaire strain, Bundibugyo has no licensed vaccine and no specific treatment, so the response rests entirely on community surveillance, infection prevention and control, safe burials and public trust. Detection depends on whether people report, and people report only where they trust. The session is built around that single argument rather than a general survey of preparedness.
