AFREhealth is an independent body that emerged from the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI) which were funded by PEPFAR-NIH and awarded to selected African medical, nursing and health science schools.
The establishment of a permanent Secretariat in an AFREhealth-member institution was considered, right from the birth of AFREhealth as a critical milestone for nurturing an interdisciplinary health professions organization which will be self-sustaining, viable, relevant and impactful in addressing Africa’s health challenges.
On the 3 rd of February, 2020, AFREhealth’s permanent secretariat, hosted at the College of Health Sciences in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology – Kumasi, Ghana, was officially launched. The event was well graced by the presence of the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, KNUST, Prof Yaw Adu-Sarkodie, Dr Flora Katz (NIH) and Dr Leslie Mancuso, Jhpiego CEO as well as AFREhealth’s President Governing Council members, the Executive Committee, Partners & Collaborators: the National Institutes of Health – USA, Infectious Diseases Institute – Makerere University, HW21/Jhpiego, media and many other dignitaries.
