Dr. Mubuuke Gonzaga, PhD, is a Senior Faculty member in the Department of Radiology, School of Medicine, Makerere University College of Health Sciences, where he is also the Vice Chairperson of the School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee and Higher Degrees Committee. He specializes in breast imaging with specialist training in medical education.
Dr. Mubuuke is also a Fogarty Fellow of Bioethics, which he obtained from Johns Hopkins University, USA, as well as a FAIMER Fellow in medical education. He is currently a global Faculty member at the Eastern Africa FAIMER Regional Institute and a project advisor at the International FAIMER Institute in Philadelphia, USA. He is the current Lead of the Eastern Africa AFREhealth Regional Chapter and has previously served as the Chairperson of the AFREhealth Health Professions Education Research Technical Working Group. He is a member of the AFREhealth Skills Development and Training Sub-Committee, and has led key initiatives within AFREhealth, including the development of the James Hakim Leadership Development Program, for which he obtained a CUGH-Fogarty leadership award, and the AFREhealth Pedagogy training program that equips faculty with educational skills. He was part of the team that developed the AFREhealth research agenda.
Dr. Mubuuke has also actively participated in writing grants with AFREhealth. He is the immediate past Chairperson of the Education Committee of the Consortium of Universities in Global Health (CUGH). He is an active researcher in both radiology and medical education with over 100 publications to his name. He is also an Associate Editor of the African Journal of Health Professions Education, a Senior Editor with BMC Medical Education and PLOS ONE, and a reviewer with Medical Education, Education for Health, Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, British Journal of Radiology, and many others. His research interests are in breast radiology, gynaecological/obstetrical ultrasound and medical education. Dr. Mubuuke has supervised over 15 PhD and over 40 Masters students and has been an external examiner for several universities. He has been a consultant in curriculum development, capacity building, and medical education. Dr. Mubuuke actively participated in writing funded grants. Previously, he was part of the implementation team for the MEPI-ESAU grant as well as a Co-Investigator on the HEPI grant, both of which aimed to strengthen health professions training in Africa.
