HIV, Infectious Disease and Global Health Implementation Research Institute

Center for Dissemination and Implementation of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis

The HIV, Infectious Disease and Global Health Implementation Research Institute (HIGH-IRI) will provide mentored training for Dissemination & Implementation research focused on HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Health.

Eligibility:

  • Post-doctoral students and early career researchers addressing Infectious Diseases, HIV, or Global Health.

Post-doctoral researcher in epidemiologic/public health research related to vaccines and vaccination

Tampere ImmunoExcellence (TIE) is a multidisciplinary platform for vaccine-related epidemiologic, public health and immunobiology research at Tampere University. TIE creates a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment for strong preclinical, clinical and post-licensure vaccination-related research, including breakthroughs in understanding the immune system and evaluating the population impact and safety of immunization programs. 

The post-doctoral position will focus on epidemiologic and public health research related to vaccines and vaccination. It is affiliated with the Health Sciences Unit (HES) in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Despite the challenges of a worldwide coronavirus, AFREhealth is on the move, and is advancing excellence by providing greater engagement and relevant opportunities for African health professionals in education, research, and service. AFREhealth desires to share best practices on improving health care systems, strengthening the health workforce, and introducing quality improvement and evidence-based practices across the African continent.

World AIDS Day 2020 will be like no other.

COVID-19 is threatening the progress that the world has made in health and development over the past 20 years, including the gains we have made against HIV.

Like all epidemics, it is widening the inequalities that already existed.

Gender inequality, racial inequality, social and economic inequalities. We are becoming a more unequal world.

Knowledge, preparedness, and attitude towards COVID-19 among health professions’ students in Africa

To whom it may concern,

The best teacher award for 2020 goes to COVID-19 and as facilitators, we are open to learning, along with our students. As health professionals’ training institutions begin to prepare to open up in Africa, or have actually opened up, this introductory letter seeks your permission to enable your students to participate in an AFREhealth COVID-19 survey for students targeting different African countries. This is imperative to understand the knowledge, attitudes and preparedness of the various health professions’ students at different levels of training towards the COVID-19 pandemic.

Debunking the Myth of Artemisia Annua for the Treatment of COVID-19

African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth) investigators from across the globe recently published a paper in the prestigious scientific Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene assessing the bioactive compounds, pharmacological and immunological effects, and traditional uses for the derivative Artemisia annua (A. annua) found in the medicinal herb Artemisia spp. which has been proposed as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

2020 MAHATHIR SCIENCE AWARD RECIPIENT IS THOUGHT LEADER IN TB, TB/HIV AND EMERGING AND RE-EMERGING EPIDEMIC INFECTIONS

Professor Sir Alimuddin ZumlaThis prestigious international award is presented annually in recognition for the best scientific work in solving the health problems of the Tropics

The recipient of the 2020 Mahathir Science Award (MSA), the most prestigious international Science Award for Tropical Sciences, is Professor Sir Alimuddin Zumla, Professor of Infectious Diseases and International Health at University College London, UK; Consultant Infectious Diseases Physician at UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London. UK.

Sir Alimuddin’s research and capacity development work over 30 years have allowed for breakthroughs in Tuberculosis, TB/HIV co-infections and Infectious Diseases with Epidemic potential, as well as improved health of disadvantaged people.

Sir Alimuddin was selected as the recipient of this award on basis of his illustrious career in infectious diseases and tropical medicine. He established and directs a multi-continent collaboration with several African, Middle Eastern, European and American institutions on collaborative research aligned closely to capacity development and training programs and his research has truly had major impact beyond academia.

Mahathir Science Award winners receive USD100,000, a Gold Medal and a Certificate.
